Published Thursday, April 2, 2020

Jacksonville Classical Academy is launching a Live Learning Series to introduce families to the classical education model while students are learning at home during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Students in grades K-6 are invited to join Head of School Dr. David Withun in a series of Google Meets scheduled throughout April as he teaches lessons which will give families a better understanding of the classical education model and its benefits.

Parents can RSVP or follow the Google Meet links to sign up for classes online at JaxClassical.org/livelearning. They will also be recorded and made available for viewing afterward. For more on the philosophy behind classical education, visit jaxclassical.org/educational-philosophy.

Jacksonville Classical Academy will open near downtown Jacksonville in fall 2020. The first year will begin with kindergarten through sixth grade and will be open to approximately 650 students, selected by random lottery. Grades will be added each year to reach K-12 with a total capacity of approximately 1,000 students. The deadline for the next enrollment lottery is Monday, April 13, with the lottery to take place on Tuesday, April 14. Parents can enroll their child by visiting jaxclassical.org/enroll.

About the Jacksonville Classical Academy

Jacksonville Classical Academy, located near downtown Jacksonville, is a tuition-free public charter school opening in Fall 2020. It will offer students a sound curriculum based on the traditions of the liberal arts and sciences, with instruction in the principles of moral character and civic virtue. It is affiliated with the renowned Hillsdale College, through its Barney Charter School Initiative. Enrollment now open for students in kindergarten through sixth grade at jaxclassical.org/enroll.

About the Barney Charter School Initiative

The Barney Charter School Initiative is a project of Hillsdale College devoted to the education of young Americans. Through this initiative, the College supports the launch of K-12 charter schools. These schools will train the minds and improve the hearts of young people through a rigorous, classical education in the liberal arts and sciences, with instruction in the principles of moral character and civic virtue.

To advance the founding of classical charter schools, Hillsdale College works with select school-founding groups of local citizens who care deeply about education, who plan to apply for a charter, and who prove themselves capable of starting and governing a school. When a founding group’s interests and abilities are a good match with the Barney Charter School Initiative, BCSI will assist in creating and implementing the school’s academic program, providing the curriculum design and teacher training. This support, along with guidance on the shaping of a vibrant and ennobling school culture, will provide the foundation for these new schools to promote a liberal and civic education in America’s public schools.

This initiative is made possible by a major grant from the Barney Family Foundation and matching gifts from other friends of Hillsdale College.
