K9s for Warriors’ Founder Chosen to Receive Prestigious Medal of Honor Award From Daughters of the American Revolution

DAR awarded Shari Duval at its 128th Continental Congress event on June 29

Published Tuesday, July 2, 2019

Shari Duval received the Daughters of the American Revolution’s Medal of Honor award for her founding role with K9s For Warriors, the nation’s largest service dog nonprofit for military veterans. The DAR Medal of Honor is the highest award given by the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The recipient must be an individual who has shown exemplary qualities of leadership, trustworthiness, service and patriotism, and has made unusual and lasting contributions to our American Heritage.

Past DAR Medal of Honor award recipients include members of NASA, human rights activists, and distinguished military veterans.

“I am just in shock that I’d be chosen for this award,” said Duval. “I have always loved our military and tried to honor them. I’m thrilled to accept this, and even more thrilled that all the outstanding folks at K9s For Warriors can partake in this honor with me.”

The award was given at the culmination of DAR’s weeklong annual convention, the 128th DAR Continental Congress, on June 29 in Washington, D.C. DAR Continental Congress attracts more than 4,000 delegates, presenting the 185,000 DAR members from all over the world, to convene and report on the year’s work, honor outstanding award recipients, plan future initiatives, and discuss matters of its mission related to historic preservation, education and patriotism.

About K9s For Warriors

K9s For Warriors is the nation’s largest provider of service dogs to military veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), and/or Military Sexual Trauma (MST) as a result of military service post-9/11. The service dog program is unique and offers an innovative approach to recovering from the invisible wounds of war. Two lives are transformed with each pairing: the veteran reduces his/her risk of suicide while the rescue dog receives a newfound purpose.
