Partnership Seeds Innovative Program: Florida Data Science for Social Good

Published Wednesday, November 2, 2016

During the Data and Technology Experience, the Nonprofit Center of Northeast Florida (Nonprofit Center) and the University of North Florida (UNF) announced a new partnership establishing the Florida Data Science for Social Good program (FDSSG). The Nonprofit Center is providing year-one startup funding.

Modeled after successful programs in Chicago and Atlanta, the Florida DSSG will provide talented students an opportunity to pursue their professional goals while providing local organizations much needed expertise in data collection, predictive analysis and information visualization. The program will launch in the summer of 2017.

“All the trends indicate that nonprofits need help managing the data they collect, using it to help them in all aspects of their work – from program evaluation to fund development,” said Rena Coughlin, Nonprofit Center CEO. “Local nonprofits will have the opportunity to work with experts and students to interpret and apply findings from data analysis; the end result will be better community outcomes.”

Leadership at UNF is provided by Dr. Karthikeyan Umapathy, Associate Professor at School of Computing, and Dr. Dan Richard, Associate Professor Department of Psychology. They developed the concept and approached the Nonprofit Center about partnering. “FDSSG objectives are to promoting data-informed approaches in nonprofits and creating educational programs for aspiring data scientists,” said Dr. Umapathy. “The FDSSG will help future data scientists expand their skills and knowledge by working on some of our community’s most challenging issues and bringing about important sustainable change,” said Dr. Richard.

Applications will be available in Spring, 2017. Only member organizations of the Nonprofit Center are eligible year one.
