History of the JAX Chamber

The Board of Trade was established on January 30, 1884, mainly to promote the dredging of the St. Johns River and to create the jetties. The name was changed to the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce in 1915, then to Jacksonville Regional Chamber of Commerce in 2005 and finally to JAX Chamber in 2013. The mission today for our 3,000 members is the same as in the early Board of Trade days – create and promote a business-friendly environment and a thriving economy where everyone in our community has the opportunity to succeed.

The Chamber created Believers in Jacksonville in 1923, becoming the first Chamber in the country to actively recruit businesses to its city. Today, JAXUSA Partnership, the seven-county regional economic development division of the Chamber, works to attract jobs and investment to our region.

The Chamber has had both a front-row seat and a behind-the-scenes impact on many of the key events in Jacksonville for more than a century. Landing an NFL franchise. Construction of the Northbank and Southbank Riverwalks downtown. Creating the Jacksonville Women’s Business Center. Forming the Lewis and White Business League to improve economic opportunities for African Americans in Jacksonville.

In 2016, the JAX Chamber was one of four national finalists for the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives Chamber of the Year Award. The Chamber’s strength lies in our business leaders coming together to make a difference and investing time to improve our city.
